With membership across North America, we are dedicated to researching and preserving the heritage of the families, individuals, and organizations that have made Eastport and the surrounding region on both sides of the U.S.-Canada border a vibrant coastal community. We offer opportunities for in-person and online discussions, workshops, and presentations throughout the year as we work to restore and maintain the properties under our stewardship. 

The "Barracks" Museum, c1820s, is the only remaining portion of a wooden building from Fort Sullivan (1808-1870s), which was built to protect the small fishing settlement and aid in the enforcement of embargoes against the British. In 1877 the U.S. Government sold the property at Fort Sullivan. The northernmost officers' quarters, built in 1809, was separated from the other two sections of quarters and moved to 74 Washington Street, where it stands today. It is one of the very few remaining wooden fort buildings from the era in all of North America and as such, was officially added to the National Register of Historical Places in 1969. 

The Powder House, built in 1808 atop Clark's Hill, was a powder magazine - with three-foot stone walls, arched brick roof -was made to protect the fort's gunpowder, and it did its job well: it's the only piece of Fort Sullivan still standing on the original site.

Our Quoddy Crafts and Visitor Center at 72 Water Street is open during the summer season. In addition to local crafts and antiques, it features a model of the waters of Passamaquoddy Bay and a Depression-era public works project -the Quoddy Dam Tidal Project- that was meant to harness the huge tidal currents for electrical generation. 

All membership fees and donations contrubute to the operating costs of BHS and its efforts to preserve these properties for the enjoyment of future generations.
